I just heard the news myself. Sad

Has anyone ever survived pancreatic cancer? That has to be one of the deadliest cancers in existence.

Not that I know of. She apparently had it for a while, but it was kept very quiet.

Ugh...it was the same way with David Bowie. He'd had liver cancer for 18 months but didn't breathe a word of it to the public. Then one day, he came right out of the blue and dropped it on our heads with the Blackstar album, which included "Lazarus" as his swan song:

And then he was dead. Sad

I mean, I understand wanting the fans to remember them as they were and not as what they became (since cancer and its treatments do take a toll on one's appearance and health), but there's also something to be said for giving one's fans a chance to reminisce about one's works and one's legacy while sending one their fondest regards and wishing one a fond farewell, you know? Sad

I agree. But being old enough to remember the "death watch" over Rock Hudson as he was dying of AIDS, I understand why they might want privacy.

True. That was a travesty. Sad

But there are differences between when the news media handles a death watch and when the dying celeb's fans handle the death watch. After posting this video on That Site Which Shall Not Be Named...

...I got to thinking about the Crystal Mountain reference (one of many, many heavy metal references throughout the entire run of Metalocalypse) and realizing that I never listened to all that many Death songs, including Crystal Mountain. So I just did that an hour or two ago.

And then I noticed a number of comments along the lines of "RIP Chuck," so I Googled around for "Death band Chuck". "Chuck" turned out to be Chuck Schuldiner, the frontman for Death and one of the most influential figures behind death metal and heavy metal in general. Why I never knew of him before, I'll never know; maybe I was too busy fangasming over the likes of AC/DC, Slayer, GWAR and Metallica (back before Lars Ulrich flipped his wig and started all his witch hunts). Undecided

Anyway, so Schuldiner was only 32 years old when he came down with brain cancer. Of course, the mainstream media would rather eat their own hearts than acknowledge that heavy metal music or its musicians exist, so the media never covered his death watch. His wife and the rest of the band, however, got word that the medical treatment would cost more than Schuldiner could pay, and he never had insurance until after the tumor on his brain stem was discovered. So rather than idly stand around and watch Chuck die, all of Death's fans started sending in donations to help him and his family cover the costs of chemotherapy and radiation therapy (as well as gifts and "Get well soon" letters appreciating him and letting him know how he influenced their lives). Unfortunately, the vincristine used in his chemotherapy all but shut down his immune system, which led to him contracting pneumonia. So in the end, the pneumonia — not the brain cancer — is what ended up killing him after a two-and-a-half year death watch, despite the best efforts of his fans and fellow musicians at saving his life.

So if the public hears that a celebrity is dying and tries to help save that celebrity's life, that's when reaching out to the public is good. But when everyone just stands around like a flock of vultures waiting for the celebrity to die, that's pretty morbid. The question is: Why do some celebrities get the good type of death watch and others get the bad kind?

It's also sad that Schuldiner was so much the heart and soul of Death that when he died, the band ceased to exist. Maybe that's for the worse, or maybe that was for the better. When GWAR's frontman Dave Brockie (stage character: Oderus Urungus) died from a heroin overdose back in 2014, GWAR's bass guitarist was promoted to lead vocals to take his place, seeing as Brockie had said years before that he wanted GWAR to continue onward even after his death, and that the costumes were part of that; if the guitarist playing Flattus Maximus died, as an example, a new guitarist could just put on the Flattus Maximus costume and resume where the last guitarist left off. But as it was proven when Corey Smoot (the last Flattus Maximus) died on the tour bus from coronary artery thrombosis and the band retired the character of Flattus Maximus out of respect for Smoot, there's a difference between wanting to do something and actually doing it. So now Oderus Urungus is retired, Blothar is in and the quality of GWAR's music has taken a notable change for the worse since Brockie's death. And I'm still torn between whether it's better for a band to continue on after its founder's death and risk sullying the founder's legacy, or if it's better for a band to dissolve whenever the creative force behind that band shuffles off the mortal coil, even if that means forfeiting the chance that the founder's replacement might do good for the band. Toughie, right?

But at least we'll always have GWAR's hilarious old music videos. Big Grin

RIP Oderus.
